HbR Interpretation - MNE-NIRS

  • MNE version: 1.7.1
  • operating system: Windows 11

Hello everyone,

I am starting to analyze fNIRS data using the MNE system, and I have a question about HbR interpretation. For HbO analysis, it’s okay, but how can I interpret HbR negative values? Is it the same as HbO? My research advisor said that if the HRF is multiplied by -1, the interpretation for HbR is the same as for HbO, but I didn’t find anything related to that in the MNE manuals.

Among my groups, the mean values of HbR are negative, and I am not sure if more negative values indicate lower concentrations.

To explain what I have done: after running a GLM individual analysis, I extracted the GLM dataframe to an Excel file and reorganized each channel and condition for a repeated measures analysis. So, there is a column for each channel and specific condition. The mean theta values that I obtained for each group in some channels were negative for HbR. Now, I want to ensure that I understand how to interpret these values correctly.

I hope you can help me with this!

Thanks!
