Equivalent signal to CBSI using enhance_negative_correlation?

Recently, more fNIRS research groups seem to performing statistical analyses on CBSI (correlation-based signal improvement) instead of HbO and HbR signals.

As far as I understand, the MATLAB process for computing CBSI is very similar, if not the same as enhance_negative_correlation in MNE-NIRS. Descriptions of both typically reference Cui et al. (2010).

Papers using CBSI describe the process as resulting in one signal. For example, “HbO2 and HbR were then combined into the ‘activation signal’ through the CBSI approach” (De Felice et al., 2024).

After applying enhance_negative_correlation, I still have HbO and HbR channels. I am wondering how I might proceed to obtain a single signal type? Does any one know if it would be reasonable to select the HbO channels as a “corrected signal” equivalent to CBSI?

Thanks in advance!

@rob-luke Might you have any recommendations? :slightly_smiling_face:
