Applying SSP for artifact removal

  • MNE version: 1.8.0
  • operating system: Windows 10

Hi, I am trying to preprocess raw EEG data for my project and the dataset I am using is CHB-MIT Dataset (CHB-MIT Scalp EEG Database v1.0.0). As far as I understand, for artifact removal, this algorithm uses recordings of EOG or ECG machines. However, my dataset has only EEG recordings. Still, It may have an artifact that needs to be reduced I am not sure. How can I detect those artifacts from EEG data? Since I am not an expert I cannot do it manually just by looking at the raw plotted data. Is there any other way for artifact removal?

Hello, for EEG, you should probably prefer ICA over SSP. In my experience, SSP removes too much signal e.g. when used for removal of ocular artifacts from EEG data.

There are extensive tutorials on artifact removal via ICA and SSP on the MNE website, take a look at these. They also explain how to isolate eye blinks even if no dedicated EOG channels are available.
